Stories and frames
Hello.
I’m probably more confused than you are about this whole thing I’m trying to do, if I’m being honest.
But here’s the thing, I have found I crave looking at photos together in a sequence. Robert Frank’s “The Americans” probably started it, or possibly even earlier looking at my hometown, and NG Photographer Jim Richardson’s Cuba Kansas and “Highschool USA” work.
Frames can be powerful, but connecting them together is even more powerful, and gives you a deeper glimpse into what the photographer is trying to say. Large bodies of work start to get muddy in my opinion…more like a beautiful photo-dump to Instagram, but still overwhelming to me.
And then I found the amazing Daido Moriyama’s “Record” series and I knew he was on to something. Shorter works, smaller stories, and the right length to really dive into the frames and the meanings.
And about the same time I found “Record” and heard about the magazine Provoke, I had started shooting with the 2009 Canon PowerShot S90. Why the hell would I do this? I have a very fine Leica M240, with amazing lenses and I love shooting with it. And I’m a ghost with it. It’s quiet, out of the way and does its damn job better than anything else I’ve used. It’s purposeful and for me, basically perfect.
But I don’t always take it with me, even though I probably should. And I realized I always threw the S90 in my jacket pocket or backpack. And, even though it’s not perfect, has ancient AF, needs modern technology in DxO DeepPrimeXD when you go above ISO 800, I loved shooting it, and loved the results.
And I noticed the collection of frames I had taken and they connected to a story and a feeling I had in that time, and I had another idea.
I probably would never lend my M240 to someone, even a trusted friend, or even my wife (sorry honey!). But even though I love this little S90, I would let one of my photographer friends borrow it…and I was kind of intrigued what they would do with it.
So, I’ve been putting together ISSUE ZERO of S*CLUB, all shot with the S90 and I started asking some friends for feedback…and if they want to be next.
I think it could be great fun, and what a great journey for this little S90.
